Interac Payments (Canada)

Summary

Interac is a payment method unique to Canada and is handled different than normal credit cards but is somewhat similar to a debit card. Here are some of the differences:

  • When the payment method is processed at the terminal, funds are immediately captured. There is no ability to do an authorization and then capture later and there is not ability to cancel the payment once completed.
  • When issuing a refund, the card must be present. You cannot issue a refund without the customer inserting their card.
  • There is no concept of voiding or canceling a payment. Once processed at the terminal, it is captured. If you need to "undo" the payment, you'll need to do a refund.
  • Interac cards cannot be tokenized/saved-on-file, customer will need to use a real credit card if this is required.
